Founders Week Celebrations at the
Silver Beach Carousel
June 24-30
http://www.silverbeachcarousel.com/events-a-news/10-events/191-founders-week-2012.html
In 1891, two boat builders, Logan Drake and Louis Wallace, founded the Silver Beach Amusement Park. For nearly 100 years, this park located along Lake Michigan thrilled millions of fun-seekers from around the world. Today, Silver Beach Center continues the legacy Drake and Wallace began and to honor them has planned a weeklong celebration with fun activities for all ages.
Sunday, June 24 - Music Day
Noon to 10 p.m.
Ride the Silver Beach Carousel and listen to some of the happiest tunes on earth played by its 100-year-old band organ. Each carousel visitor will receive free, freshly spun cotton candy. Plus, enjoy music from the Reveliers, a barbershop quartet, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. More free music can be heard at the nearby St. Joseph Municipal Band concerts at 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and a Big Band sunset concert at 9 p.m. All three concerts will be held at the John E. N. Howard Bandshell in Lake Bluff Park, overlooking Lake Michigan and the St. Joseph River.
Monday, June 25 – Seniors' Day
10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Free carousel rides for everyone 65 years and older. Plus free popcorn served noon to 5 p.m. This is a great day to bring the grandchildren and visit the free Silver Beach Amusement Park Museum. Its exhibits will spark memories of good times along the midway and boardwalk.
Tuesday, June 26 - Kiddies' Day
10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
This fun-filled day includes $1 carousel rides (half-price), carnival-style games and a coloring contest with prizes. Sarett Nature Center will also offer multiple shows featuring live animals in the Shadowland Ballroom.
Wednesday, June 27 - Beach Day

The amazing "Sand Pirate" Janet Schrader will create pirate-themed sand sculptures on the Silver Beach Center patio. Visitors are encouraged to pick up a treasure map at the information desk to help them find 27 "Beached Pirates" sculptures scattered around downtown. One sculpture, an interactive sea horse named "Treasured Memories," was created by Carousel Operator Ken Kaszubowski and is easy to find outside the Silver Beach Center.
Thursday, June 28 - Rhythm Day
10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
This family-focused day includes a special activity from 2-3 p.m. when all ages can participate in Drummunity! at Silver Beach Center's Shadowland Ballroom. Visitors are encouraged to watch the Lest We Forget Military Vehicle Parade at 6 p.m. in downtown St. Joseph. The parade will feature military vehicles and classic 1940s cars. "Going to the downtown Farmer's

fruits and vegetables. Things have changed! Saturday morning at the Market now
includes jams, honey, hearth-baked breads and fine pastries, perennials, cut
flowers, organic vegetables and so much more!
Take the time to chat with vendors
who will share recipes, planting recommendations and cooking tips. Also, plan
to visit with several friends since the number of people attending this weekly
event has continued to grow over the last few years. It's a Saturday tradition!

Movie Matinee 2:00 pm – “Cars” G*
“As his name suggests, Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) is
all about speed. A hotshot red stock car who's poised to be the next champion
-- Lightning wants to win the coveted Piston Cup. As the movie begins, he hits
the track in a race against two legendary race cars. A dead-heat finale sends
these three key contenders off to a showdown. Lightning boards his transport
truck Mack (John
Ratzenberger) and aims west along Route 66, but he's sidetracked when he
falls off the truck in a small town where he meets his life teachers, including
Sarge the reveille-playing, surplus-selling Jeep (Paul Dooley),
Ramone the hyper-detailed lowrider (Cheech Marin), and new best friend, Mater
the tow truck (Larry the
Cable Guy) provides the requisite proud-to-be-a-redneck jokes. Sentenced to
community service, Lightning tries to escape but eventually gives in. Lightning
grumbles on the night shift, but by day, he discovers the beauty of the western
landscape, all big skies and grand canyons, the sort of mythic imagery that,
according to the movie's nostalgia, families once drove across country to
consume.”
Tuesday
Movie Matinee 2:00 pm – “Cars 2” G*
Parents need to know that this fast-paced sequel to
Pixar's hit movie Cars
is more like a kid-friendly James Bond action thriller than the original
movie's fish-out-of-water adventure. There are more high-speed chases here than
in the original and a surprising amount of gun violence; a couple of car
characters are even killed, which makes the G rating a bit of a surprise.
Expect a bit of mild language, including insults like "idiot" and
"fool," as well as tame flirting between smitten cars. The movie's
overall message of being true to yourself and loyal to your friends is coupled
with an overt call for alternative fuel and environmentalism. Note: The 3-D
version of the movie may make certain parts feel even more immediate and
intense for some kids.
