September 19 – September 26, 2012

Well, we are back, full swing, into the school year.  Between all of the activities the girls are involved in, and my necessary trips to the library, we’ve been super busy!

Last weekend, we were fortunate to head up to Michigan’s Irish Fest in Muskegeon. What a blast! My daughters loved the Irish Dancing, which I knew they would.   They also loved all of the Irish music.  We had a great time listening to Kennedy’s Kitchen with my parents, and the girls had fun dancing around to the Irish beat.  We would have liked to stay and see Gaelic Storm, but, unfortunately, they didn’t start until after 9 pm, and it was a kind of long drive home. Well, maybe next time? Also, unless you’re ready for it, do not purchase “Genuine Irish Whistles” for two little kids who do not know how to play them.  It has been loud around here this week!

If you like the blog and the information, please check out the new Facebook page. I’m posting pictures, as well as updating more events that are posted on Facebook. Be sure to LIKE the new page and tell your friends!

The Heritage Museum and Cultural Center in partnership with members of the Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michiana and Heart of Michigan will open an exhibit celebrating the organization’s 100 year history titled, “The Year of the Girl: Celebrating 100 Years of Girl Scouting.” In southwest Michigan, Girl Scout troops first met in 1927 at the First Community Church in Benton Harbor. Since then, Girl Scouts has grown to over 10,000 members in southwest Michigan and have contributed thousands of hours of service to the community. Notable local Girl Scout alumni include Priscilla Upton Byrns, Peggy McAllister, Mary Beth Sanborn and the late Jacquelin Taglia, all former Girl Scout leaders. Among the items featured in the exhibit are: a Mariner Scout uniform, a 1938 Girl Scout uniform, a number of locally collected badges, photographs and dolls. The exhibit also features activities where visitors can participate in a scavenger hunt, design their own badge and share their memories of Girl Scouting. “The Year of the Girl” will be open until March 2013 in the Heritage Museum’s Second Floor Shepard Hall Balcony exhibit area and Activities Room. Local Cadette Girl Scouts Susie Payne, Isabel Widdis and Lexi Ziebarth assisted with exhibit research, writing and design as their project to earn the Silver Award. Heritage Museum Curator Caitlyn Dial remarks, “I am happy to have worked with these young women. They have shown tremendous pride and knowledge of Girl Scouts and it shows in the exhibit.” This exhibition is truly a chance to connect with Girl Scouts of all generations and to embrace the future of girls everywhere

This week’s movie is: Mirror MIrror.” PG

Snow White (Lily Collins) has spent the years since her father the king's disappearance imprisoned in the castle, while her greedy stepmother the queen (Julia Roberts) ruthlessly rules over the kingdom. The day of her 18th birthday, Snow escapes to the village and witnesses its poverty. On the way, she encounters two half-dressed men tied upside down to a tree. She frees the men -- who turn out to be Prince Alcott (Armie Hammer) and his valet -- and is instantly attracted to the tall and handsome royal hero. The two reunite at a castle ball, but the queen has set her sights on marrying the prince to have access to even more wealth, so she commands her aide (Nathan Lane) to kill Snow White. As she runs through the woods, Snow stumbles into a tiny abode, which is the home of the seven dwarfs (though unlike the Disney dwarfs, these seven guys are marauding thieves who teach Snow their warrior ways). With the queen still determined to marry the prince, Snow White is in grave danger when it's revealed she wasn't murdered after all.”
