August 1 – August 8, 2012

The Olympics have taken over the airways! It’s been so great to watch all of these amazing athletes, pretty much at any time of the day.
Way to go, Women’s Gymnastics Team! Team Gold for the first time since ’96! Congratulations, especially to Jordyn Weiber!  Michigan's Own Olympic Gymnast. Despite her heart-breaking miss of the All-Around competition, she brought her A Game to the Finals, and performed like the champion she is! Wow!
The swimming events are always exciting, and I don’t know about you, but, my new favorite swimmer is Missy Franklin.  She’s awesome and a wonderful role-model.  My other favorite sport, Volleyball, has been really fun to watch. But, the most fun of the Olympics?  Watching my daughters’ faces as they take in the different sports.  This is the first time they have really understood what is going on.  Well, my oldest, anyway.  Now, she wants to be an Olympian. A gymnast to be more specific! It’s been a lot of fun watching her “practice” and exercise.

I have to say, the Opening Ceremonies were wonderful.  I really enjoyed them.  The best part for me?  As an avid reader, the tribute to English Children’s Literature was amazing.  Some of my favorite stories were a part of the show.  Did you see any of your favorite characters/scenes?  Of course, watching Queen Elizabeth jump out of a helicopter with James Bond was just awesome.

Have you and your family been enjoying the Olympics together?  What other fun activities have you been taking part in?

As you know, I am always looking for more family friendly events to add. Please send any that you know about my way! Thank you! I just found out that you may have to log into Google to leave a message below.  Please note, you can also send me an email at: familyfuninSWMI@gmail.com.

Watch as the streets of downtown St. Joseph are transformed into beautiful works of art! If you have not seen this before, try not to miss this event.  The artists are amazing and spend hours working on their pieces. Even though I've been hoping and praying for rain, I'll hope it stays bright and sunny this weekend, so the artists' works are not washed away before they can be judged and viewed!

Aug 4: 10am-4pm (judging begins at 4pm)
Aug 5: All day viewing

Don't forget Sidewalk Sales with the downtown merchants will be all day August 2-5!

WHIRLPOOL hispanic network RAISES MONEY FOR LOCAL FAMILIES WITH
10th ANNual latin tastes & rhythms festival

BENTON HARBOR, Mich.,– The Whirlpool Hispanic Network is holding its 10th annual Latin Tastes & Rhythm Festival on August 4th at 3:00 p.m. EDT, at the Shadowland Pavilion at Silver Beach in St. Joseph, Mich. The cultural awareness event, which is open to the public, is co-sponsored by Whirlpool Corporation, and is geared towards raising funds to support the Migrant Project, the network’s largest community initiative. The proceeds will help supply basic necessities for local Michiana Hispanic families in need.

The festival will include the following family-oriented activities:
  • ·         Live music
  • ·         Arts and crafts class organized by Benton Harbor Education
  • ·         Soccer tournaments
  • ·         Zumba demonstration by the instructors of the Benton Harbor-St. Joseph YMCA
  • ·         Presentation of Capoeira and other Brazilian rhythms
  • ·         Chili pepper eating contest
  • ·         Corn-hole tournament
  • ·         Salsa-making competition sponsored by Q’doba
  • ·         Kid’s Area by community of Michiana with face-painting, piñatas and a bouncy house
In addition, the event will display posters featuring art from Mica Shenk, a 10th grade student from Penn High School in Mishawaka, Ind. Mica won the annual competition where local schools submit their works of art to be considered as the essence and background of the festival. There were exceptional pieces of art submitted this year, the choice was difficult but we believe Mica captured the environment of the festival most profoundly with her beautiful piece.

Tickets are $7 in advance and $10 at the door. They may be purchased before the event at Martin’s Supermarket in St. Joseph, Stevensville and Niles, or at La Perla Produce in Benton Harbor. Children 10 years and under get in free, and students will be admitted for $5 at the door with a valid student ID. For additional information on tickets, please call 269-923-2571.
