March 14 through March 21, 2012

MARCH 14 THROUGH MARCH 21

FINALLY!  It is Saint Patrick’s Day weekend!  I look forward to this holiday every year.  Growing up with a strong Irish heritage, this was a very special holiday in my house. Each year, we dress up in green, eat corned beef and cabbage, decorate the house and sing Irish songs.  Sometimes, we would attend a parade, and when I was an adult, there was always a trip to a local “watering hole” to drink Irish beer (not green beer!) and sing Irish songs (badly).
This year is no different!  We will be singing all of the great songs, eating some great Corned Beef and my Great Aunt Detta’s amazing Soda Bread and celebrating with family and friends.  Last year, I found this recipe for Corned Beef: “Guiness Corned Beef”.  http://allrecipes.com/recipe/guinness-corned-beef/detail.aspx?event8=1&prop24=SR_Title&e11=guinness%20corned%20beef&e8=Quick%20Search&event10=1&e7=Home%20Page

The corned beef was so popular, I did not have any leftovers! I will not make that mistake again this year.  This recipe does not include any vegetables, so do not forget your cabbage, carrots and the Irish staple, potatoes!  We’ll also be listening to some great Irish music, lead by “Gaelic Storm” my favorite Irish band.  Give them a listen!
Last week, my daughters and I attended the S.A.G.E. School-age stories and crafts at the Lincoln Township Public Library and had a great time! There were 3 stories aimed at first and second graders and about 6 kids in attendance.  The books were all available for check-out after the story-time concluded.  My daughter loved, “Crafty Chloe” by Kelly DePucchio about a little girl who decides to “make” a birthday present for her friend, and the challenges that presented.  Once the stories were completed, there was craft time, which included worksheets provided by the publisher of “Crafty Chloe” and included take home crayons.  There is a website which provides instructions on how to create the wonderful crafts featured in the book:  http://craftychloe.squarespace.com/
A friend of mine took her kids to the Flick’s Family Film Festival and enjoyed the movie, “Ice Age 3.”  It was a fun family event, to help celebrate her 10 year old son’s birthday.  They were home in time to complete homework AND get to bed on time!
If you attend any of the events I have listed below, please let me know about it!  Comment below or drop me an email at: familyfuninswmi@gmail.com

Celtic Celebration
March 17, 2012 • Saturday 7:30pm
Pre-concert conversation 6:30pm
LMC Mendel Mainstage
Guest Artists: Deborah Henson-Conant, electric harp;
Lake Michigan Youth Orchestra

There’s no instrument more Celtic than the harp – but this is harp with a twist! Using stories, songs, virtuosic instrumentals, and a strong dose of humor, Deborah Henson- Conant brings the Celtic Bard into the 21st century. Like the Troubadours of old, Henson-Conant straps on her harp, sings and tells stories – but unlike the old days, she electrifies the harp – and the audience with tales of Motorcycle-Driving Scotsmen,
haunted harpers, Robert Burns and J.D. Salinger – and then a heart-breaking rendition of Danny Boy – not the operatic tour-de-force we’re used to, but an intimate, personal song of pathos, loss, and love.
She’s America’s only bad-girl harpist, “doing for the harp what Chuck Berry and Elvis once did for the guitar”(Denver Post). See her once, and you’ll never look at a harp the same way again.
The Lake Michigan Youth Orchestra will also be featured in a special side-by-side performance of Mendelssohn's Fingal's Cave with the SMSO.
