July 12 – July 18, 2012

I took a week off for the Independence Day Holiday and we were so busy! We had some great friends from Illinois visit and we were able to go to the beach and watch  the St. Joseph Fireworks. We went to Silver Beach Pizza and then to the Whirlpool fountain to enjoy St. Joseph to its fullest.  We also were able to see “Brave” (here’s my review: “AWESOME HAIR! And, a pretty good movie, too!”) and visit the Curious Kids Museum, Discovery Zone.  Every part of this family week was fun, and busy, including the few new recipes I tried. How was your 4th of July holiday?

If you have any suggestions to make this blog easier to use, please send me an email, or leave a note below.  I appreciate any feedback.
Also, I am always looking for more family friendly events to add. Please send any that you know about my way! Thank you! I just found out that you may have to log into Google to leave a message below.  Please note, you can also send me an email at: familyfuninSWMI@gmail.com.

 Krasl Art Fair

707 Lake Boulevard
Saint Joseph, MI 49085
269-983-0271

Join the Krasl Art Center as we celebrate the 51st anniversary of the Krasl Art Fair on the Bluff, July 14-15, 2012.

What started out, as a “clothesline” art fair in 1962 with 50 local artists, has grown to an art fair with a national reputation. There will be 216 jury-selected artists showing their work this year in the perfect mix of fine art and fine craft. We are proud to display the work of these exceptional artists and you will be impressed by the unique quality of their works. There will also be a booth featuring young “emerging artists” and their work.

 Smooth Jazz at Sunset
Smooth Jazz At Sunset provides "A" list performers the Saturday evening of the Krasl Art Fair weekend. These Smooth Jazz artists don't play your average jazz, but a mix of POP, Jazz, Latin and Urban grooves that both create a relaxing mood and moments where you want to get out of your seat and dance. With the back drop of Silver Beach, you'll not only enjoy great music, but terrific scenery along with sailboats meandering up and down the river flowing right beside the stage. Plenty of food and drink (including adult beverages) are available at the show. It's a perfect night for those that both want something upbeat and energetic as well as groovy and romantic. We hope to see you there!

“The Music Man”
Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical, The Music Man is an affectionate salute to the bygone era of Smalltown, U.S.A.. Meredith Wilson’s beloved composition follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boy's band he vows to organize – despite the fact that he doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by the curtain’s fall. Including favorites like "76 trombones", "Gary, Indiana", and "The Wells Fargo Wagon", this semi-staged concert version is produced and directed by Paul Mow's "Pitch Inn Productions" (The Secret Garden, Carousel). This light-hearted musical classic is sure to leave you whistling these tunes throughout the remainder of your summer.

Monday Movie Matinee 2:00 pm – “Treasure Island” PG*

Monday, July 16

Bobby Driscoll plays Jim Hawkins, a fatherless boy managing his mother's English inn, whose residents include a sickly, hard-drinking ex-pirate named Billy Bones (Finlay Currie). When Billy's menacing former shipmates track him down, Bones lives just long enough to give Jim his secret map pointing the way to treasure buried by a fearsome pirate called Flint. Jim takes the map to the foppish local squire and his doctor friend, who decide that it would be grand adventure to fit out a ship and get the treasure themselves. At the docks they hook up with a salty, one-legged cook called Long John Silver (Robert Newton), who promises to find them an experienced crew. Jim Hawkins goes along as a cabin boy when the ship sets sail, and he becomes quite a friend of the colorful Long John. Only by chance does Jim overhear the truth -- that Silver was quartermaster under the late Captain Flint, and the crew he hand-picked are actually Flint's old gang of cutthroats, reassembled and preparing to kill Jim and the few non-pirates aboard once the treasure (or at least the map) is in their hands.”

 Tuesday, July 17

Tuesday Movie Matinee 2:00 pm – “The Muppets Treasure Island” G*

“The Muppets take to the high seas in this lively version of Robert Louis Stevenson's novel. The adventure begins when pirate Billy Bones (Billy Connelly) gives a treasure map to young orphan Jim Hawkins (Kevin Bishop) and his friends Gonzo and Rizzo the Rat. After a narrow escape from map-seeking pirates, the three manage to get on board the ship of Captain Smollet (Kermit the Frog). But trouble brews when nasty pirate king Long John Silver (Tim Curry) and his monster Muppet minions appear, dead set on getting the map and treasure. Wild comedic adventure ensues, including a narrow escape from a gang of wild boars and their very beautiful queen (Miss Piggy), who's livid at the frog captain for abandoning her at the altar.”
